In some languages, like Hebrew and ancient Greek, letters have been used to write numerals, so it seems likely that people would have been able to easily see words in them. The Katapayadi system from India is an ancient system for remembering numbers that has similarities with the Major System. Ben Pridmoreīen Pridmore added vowels back to the basic major system, along with some other changes, to create the Ben System. This part of the history requires more research. Wood does mentioned that he studied Gouraud’s memory methods, so it could have been that Wood forgot where the idea originated. In chapter 17 of his 1936 book, Mind and Memory Training, Ernest Wood claimed to have made some changes to von Feinaigle’s mnemonic system to produce the modern major system as we know it today, but it appears that Wood’s version of the system was published almost 100 years earlier by Gouraud. See also the memory wiki page for the major system, because it has additional information, including some notes about other early writers like Ernest E. I use a modified major system for consonants where 6 is “b” because they look similar. I think individual people also modify the system for their own use. EDIT: The version of the Major System that he popularized appears to be Francis Fauvel-Gourad’s Aimé Paris’ system. The Wikipedia article says that the major system in its current form was popularized by Harry Lorayne. He published the first version of used Aimé Paris’ version of the modern Major System in his 19th century book Phreno-Mnemotechny. I’ve edited this post (Jan 15, 2013) to add Francis Fauvel-Gourad. His book, The Anti-Absurd or Phrenotypic English Pronouncing and Orthographical Dictionary, contains the modern version of the major system. Some people believe that Major Beniowsky is the “Major” in the major system (but see the comments below for an alternate opinion). It seems that he was the person who first published it in the modern form, so it might even be accurate to call it the Paris System. I wanted to mention Aimé Paris who modified Gregor von Feinaigle’s system to create what we know as the modern major system. I’m editing this post again (January 22, 2014) with a few updates. I uploaded a PDF copy of his book here: The New Art of Memory. He assigns the following letters to digits: This is the first version that starts to look like the modern Major System. Download a PDF of his book here: Memoria Technica Gregor von Feinaigleįrom Wikipedia: ” In 1808 Gregor von Feinaigle introduced the improvement of representing the digits by consonant sounds…” I haven’t read the whole book, but it seems like he is just making nonsense words, not images. Some examples of usage that he gives are: Here is a screenshot of one illustration of his early Major Systemįrom Wikipedia: ” In 1730, Richard Grey set forth a complicated system that used both consonants and vowels to represent the digits.”Īt this point in history, the system still uses both consonants and vowels, but interestingly it alternates consonants and vowels almost like the Ben System: His system, published in 1648, is online here, but it’s in German. Stanislaus Mink von Wennssheinįrom Wikipedia: ” The major system was further developed by Stanislaus Mink von Wennsshein 300 years ago.” The assumption here was that ‘cadator’ was easier to remember than 314159. So to remember a number such as 314159 one produced a word such as ‘cadator’ which then translated back into 314159. introduced a code by which numbers were translated into words to aid memorising them. Update: There is a brief description here: I couldn’t find the details of the system, but apparently he used both consonants and vowels in Latin and French. Pierre Hérigoneįrom Wikipedia: ” Pierre Hérigone (1580–1643) was a French mathematician and astronomer and devised the earliest version of the major system.” In this article, we’ll look at how the major system has evolved over time. The basic idea may even be thousands of years old. The major system is a technique for memorizing numbers that is at least several hundred years old.

In the vibrant city of Chicago, where entertainment options abound, bowling alleys have become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. Several music artists have also released videos featuring footage from Fireside shows.Bowling has long been a popular recreational activity that brings people together for hours of fun, friendly competition, and laughter. More famously, the 2006 movie The Break Up, with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, has several bowling scenes that were shot at the Fireside. The Fireside has experienced the silver screen, as several movies feature the alley, including Rapid Fire from 1992. This lead to a huge renovation in 2004, which resulted in a lot more modern amenities at the alley. The alley never closed, but it had to agree to a renewed commitment to putting bowling in a more central role. There were still a few nights of league and open bowling, but Fireside was thought of primarily as a venue to catch a show.Īround 2000, rumors swirled that it would have to be shut down as a result of various City of Chicago initiatives. Eventually, the bowling became less and less of a focus, and the music became the main feature. It was an extremely popular Chicago bowling destination until the 1990s when it began to feature live music. The building was actually an ice factory in its earliest days, and in the 1940s it was turned into a bowling alley by then owner Hank Sophie. It has been serving the Chicago bowling public for over 60 years, although it has gone through some significant changes during that time. This Chicago bowling center advertises itself as “An Original Chicago” alley, and there is plenty of truth to the claim. Joe brings that same passion to How-To Geek. The Atomic theory is the scientific explanation of the properties of atoms and matter that combines factors of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. We all are aware of the modern theory which says that “matter is made up of tiny particles known as atoms which in turn are made up of subatomic particles”. Ernest Rutherford said that an atom consists of the whole mass that is concentrated into the center.įrom the above statement, we can say that both the models of the atom differ in the way they explained the movements of electrons around the nucleus and their energy levels. "Never express yourself more clearly than you are able to think.Niels Bohr postulates the atomic model which states that electrons move in specific circular orbits around the nucleus with quantized kinetic and potential energies. "The best weapon of a dictatorship is secrecy, but the best weapon of a democracy should be the weapon of openness." "Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real." It forces us to change our thinking in order to find it." "Every great and deep difficulty bears in itself its own solution. It has since been renamed the Niels Bohr Institute in his honor. Bohr's theory stresses the point that an experiment's results are deeply affected by the measurement tools used to carry them out.īohr's contributions to the study of quantum mechanics are forever memorialized at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, which he helped found in 1920 and headed until his death in 1962. This concept, which forms the basis of early quantum theory, also explains that regardless of how one views an electron, all understanding of its properties must be rooted in empirical measurement. Quantum theoryīohr's concept of complementarity, which he wrote about in a number of essays between 19, states that an electron can be viewed in two ways, either as a particle or as a wave, but never both at the same time. Atomic Energy Project during World War II, Bohr was an outspoken advocate for the peaceful application of atomic physics. This theory was instrumental in the first attempts to split uranium atoms in the 1930s, an important step in the development of the atomic bomb.ĭespite his contributions to the U.S. According to his liquid droplet theory, a liquid drop provides an accurate representation of an atom's nucleus. He believed that nations should be completely open with one another and wrote down these views in his Open Letter to the United Nations in 1950.Ī stylized representation of a lithium atom illustrates Niels Bohr's atomic model, that an atom is a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. He dedicated his work toward the peaceful use of atomic physics and toward solving political problems arising from the development of atomic weapons of destruction. It was important to him, however, to use his skills for good and not violence. He spent the last two years of the war in England and the United States, where he got involved with the Atomic Energy Project. When the Nazis invaded Denmark in World War II, Bohr managed to escape to Sweden. Later in life, he became president of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, as well as a member of scientific academies all over the world. In the same year that he began his studies with Rutherford, Bohr married the love of his life, Margaret Nørlund, with whom he had six sons. This work earned him a Nobel Prize of his own in 1922. In 1920, he was appointed the head of the Institute for Theoretical Physics.Ĭombining Rutherford's description of the nucleus and Planck's theory about quanta, Bohr explained what happens inside an atom and developed a picture of atomic structure. Silicon rock crystals were familiar to various ancient civilizations, such as the predynastic Egyptians who used it for beads and small vases, as well as the ancient Chinese. Owing to the abundance of silicon in the Earth's crust, natural silicon-based materials have been used for thousands of years. Silica is deposited in many plant tissues. Only traces are required by most animals, but some sea sponges and microorganisms, such as diatoms and radiolaria, secrete skeletal structures made of silica. Silicon is an essential element in biology. In 2019, 32.4% of the semiconductor market segment was for networks and communications devices, and the semiconductors industry is projected to reach $726.73 billion by 2027. The small portion of very highly purified elemental silicon used in semiconductor electronics (<15%) is essential to the transistors and integrated circuit chips used in most modern technology such as smartphones and other computers. The late 20th century to early 21st century has been described as the Silicon Age (also known as the Digital Age or Information Age) because of the large impact that elemental silicon has on the modern world economy. Silicon is the basis of the widely used synthetic polymers called silicones. Silicon compounds such as silicon carbide are used as abrasives and components of high-strength ceramics. They are also used in whiteware ceramics such as porcelain, and in traditional silicate-based soda–lime glass and many other specialty glasses. Silicates are used in Portland cement for mortar and stucco, and mixed with silica sand and gravel to make concrete for walkways, foundations, and roads. Such use includes industrial construction with clays, silica sand, and stone. Most silicon is used commercially without being separated, often with very little processing of the natural minerals. More than 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of silicate minerals, making silicon the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust (about 28% by mass), after oxygen. It is widely distributed in space in cosmic dusts, planetoids, and planets as various forms of silicon dioxide (silica) or silicates. Silicon is the eighth most common element in the universe by mass, but very rarely occurs as the pure element in the Earth's crust. Its melting and boiling points of 1414 ☌ and 3265 ☌, respectively, are the second highest among all the metalloids and nonmetals, being surpassed only by boron. Its oxides form a family of anions known as silicates. īecause of its high chemical affinity for oxygen, it was not until 1823 that Jöns Jakob Berzelius was first able to prepare it and characterize it in pure form. These may be due to its significant band gap, expansive optical transmission range, extensive absorption spectrum, surface roughening, and effective anti-reflection coating. Si is widely regarded as the predominant semiconductor material due to its versatile applications in various electrical devices such as transistors, solar cells, integrated circuits, and others. Silicon (Si) element is a significant element that is essential for several physiological and metabolic processes in plants. It is a member of group 14 in the periodic table: carbon is above it and germanium, tin, lead, and flerovium are below it. It is a hard, brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic luster, and is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor. Silicon is a chemical element it has symbol Si and atomic number 14. Carbonic acid is weak compared to some of the well-known acids that break down solids, such as hydrochloric acid (the main ingredient in gastric acid, which digests food in your stomach) and sulfuric acid (the main ingredient in car batteries, which can burn your skin with just a drop). When water (H 2O) and CO 2 mix, they combine to form carbonic acid (H 2CO 3). A series of chemical changes break down the CO 2 molecules and recombine them with others. But some 30 percent of this CO 2 dissolves into seawater, where it doesn't remain as floating CO 2 molecules. Most of this CO 2 collects in the atmosphere and, because it absorbs heat from the sun, creates a blanket around the planet, warming its temperature. But, thanks to people burning fuels, there is now more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than anytime in the past 15 million years. (NOAA PMEL Carbon Program ( Link))Ĭarbon dioxide is naturally in the air: plants need it to grow, and animals exhale it when they breathe. This graph shows rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, rising CO2 levels in the ocean, and decreasing pH in the water off the coast of Hawaii. Second, this process binds up carbonate ions and makes them less abundant-ions that corals, oysters, mussels, and many other shelled organisms need to build shells and skeletons. First, the pH of seawater water gets lower as it becomes more acidic. There are two important things to remember about what happens when carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater. Acidification ChemistryĪt its core, the issue of ocean acidification is simple chemistry. Beyond lost biodiversity, acidification will affect fisheries and aquaculture, threatening food security for millions of people, as well as tourism and other sea-related economies. Some organisms will survive or even thrive under the more acidic conditions while others will struggle to adapt, and may even go extinct. What we do know is that things are going to look different, and we can't predict in any detail how they will look. Although scientists have been tracking ocean pH for more than 30 years, biological studies really only started in 2003, when the rapid shift caught their attention and the term "ocean acidification" was first coined. However, while the chemistry is predictable, the details of the biological impacts are not. Overall, it's expected to have dramatic and mostly negative impacts on ocean ecosystems-although some species (especially those that live in estuaries) are finding ways to adapt to the changing conditions. In fact, the shells of some animals are already dissolving in the more acidic seawater, and that’s just one way that acidification may affect ocean life. Such a relatively quick change in ocean chemistry doesn’t give marine life, which evolved over millions of years in an ocean with a generally stable pH, much time to adapt. As those surface layers gradually mix into deep water, the entire ocean is affected. (Scientists call this stabilizing effect “buffering.”) But so much carbon dioxide is dissolving into the ocean so quickly that this natural buffering hasn’t been able to keep up, resulting in relatively rapidly dropping pH in surface waters. Scientists formerly didn’t worry about this process because they always assumed that rivers carried enough dissolved chemicals from rocks to the ocean to keep the ocean’s pH stable. In the past 200 years alone, ocean water has become 30 percent more acidic-faster than any known change in ocean chemistry in the last 50 million years. Even though the ocean is immense, enough carbon dioxide can have a major impact. When carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater, the water becomes more acidic and the ocean’s pH (a measure of how acidic or basic the ocean is) drops. But in the past decade, they’ve realized that this slowed warming has come at the cost of changing the ocean’s chemistry. Since the beginning of the industrial era, the ocean has absorbed some 525 billion tons of CO 2 from the atmosphere, presently around 22 million tons per day.Īt first, scientists thought that this might be a good thing because it leaves less carbon dioxide in the air to warm the planet. At least one-quarter of the carbon dioxide (CO 2) released by burning coal, oil and gas doesn't stay in the air, but instead dissolves into the ocean. Ocean acidification is sometimes called “climate change’s equally evil twin,” and for good reason: it's a significant and harmful consequence of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that we don't see or feel because its effects are happening underwater. |
